About

Born in Lahore, Pakistan in 1969, Shahzia Sikander trained in traditional miniature painting during a period when the medium was largely out of favor with younger artists under the military regime of Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq. She earned her B.F.A. in 1991 from the National College of Arts (NCA) in Lahore, where she studied under master miniaturist Bashir Ahmad and later became the first woman to teach in the Miniature Painting Department. During her time at NCA, she emerged as a pioneering figure within the discipline, challenging its technical and aesthetic boundaries, with her early work The Scroll (1989–90) receiving major national recognition and awards that helped elevate the medium within contemporary art discourse. She later moved to the United States to pursue an M.F.A. at the Rhode Island School of Design, followed by participation in the CORE Program at the Glassell School of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
